Early childhood and education

Debra was reared as an only child in Morristown by her Italian father, a chef, and her American mother, a waitress. Debra became interested in cuisine from a young age, influenced by her parents, and both her father and mother would teach her whatever she wanted to know.

Debra was physically active in high school, playing soccer and tennis for the school teams. After graduating in 1979, she enrolled at Boston University, where she studied engineering for a year before dropping out and enrolling at The Culinary Institute of America, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1984 and launched her career as a chef.

While still in college, Debra began working at the Tarragon Tree Restaurant in Chatham, New York, then at Toto Steakhouse in Summit, New Jersey.

Debra met Bobby Flay in June 1990 at a chef-organized gathering, and the two began dating the next day. Bobby proposed to Debra after less than a month, and they married in a private ceremony attended by their closest friends and family in May 1991. Bobby was nominated for the same James Beard Foundation Prize for Rising Star Chef in 1992, but wished to withdraw after learning that Debra was also nominated; however, he was not allowed to, and the award went to Debra nonetheless. Bobby received the same award from Debra in 1993.

They divorced at the end of 1993, and a year later, Debra met and married the Italian Greg Addonizio, who prefers to stay out of the spotlight. Debra gave birth to their daughter Remy a few months after the wedding, and their two sons Cole and Gray followed in the next five years. Bobby dropped out of school at the age of 17 to pursue a profession as a chef. His initial employment was at a Baskin-Robbins cake speciality store restaurant and a pizza parlour, and his father eventually helped him get a job as a salad chef at Joe Allen Restaurant. The proprietor of the restaurant, Joe Allen, was so impressed with Bobby’s abilities that he paid for him to attend the French Culinary Institute. After receiving his degree in 1984, he became a sous-chef and later began working as a chef for Jonathan Waxman at his Bud and Jams restaurant.

Bobby had a brief hiatus from cooking when he entered the stock exchange company, but he quickly returned to the kitchen as the executive chef at Miracle Grill. Bobby began working as an executive chef at the Mesa Grill on January 15, 1991, and later became a partner.

He built his first restaurant, Bolo Bar & Restaurant, in November 1993, and then opened numerous other Mesa Grill restaurants in the United States, including one in Las Vegas, which was the only one to get a Michelin star, but which was removed a year later.
