Slaviša Jokanović began his professional career in 1986 with FK Novi Sad in Yugoslavia (now Serbia). He joined Deportivo de La Corua in Spain in 1994, but his stint there was cut short owing to injuries.
He returned to Yugoslavia after his stay in Spain and played for many clubs, including Real Oviedo, Tenerife, and Deportivo Alavés. In the year 2000, he joined Chelsea FC in England, where he played under boss Gianluca Vialli. He struggled to establish himself in the Chelsea team, though, and left after only one season.
In 2001, he joined Queens Park Rangers (QPR), where he stayed for two seasons before retiring from professional football in 2003. Jokanovi played for the Yugoslav national team for the most of his career, garnering 64 caps and scoring 10 goals. He represented Yugoslavia in the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro 2000.
Managerial Career
Jokanovi turned into football management after retiring as a player. He began his management career in 2007, when he took over as manager of Partizan Belgrade. In 2008 and 2009, he led the team to two Serbian SuperLiga victories. Jokanovi went on to manage clubs such as Muangthong United in Thailand and Levski Sofia in Bulgaria.
He is best recognized, however, for his successful stints with two English clubs. From 2014 to 2015, he led Watford FC to promotion from the Championship to the Premier League. Furthermore, he transferred to Fulham FC in 2015 and helped them gain promotion to the Premier League in the 2017-2018 season.
Meanwhile, in June 2019, he signed a two-year contract with Qatari club Al-Gharafa SC, where he will remain until the 2021 season. He was nominated for Manager of the Season in his debut year in the Stars League.
After his contract with Al-Gharafa SC expired, he was hired on a three-year contract by freshly relegated Sheffield United in May 2021, becoming the club’s first manager from outside the country. Furthermore, he was fired on November 25 after winning six of the 19 Championship games.
He signed a deal with Russian Premier League team FC Dynamo Moscow for the following season in June 2022, with the option of two more years based on his performance. He was fired by the team on May 14, 2023, with Dynamo in seventh position after a 0-3 home loss to FC Akhmat Grozny.
