Childhood of Dan Gable

Gable was born to parents who never worked together, which had a negative impact on Dan and his sister’s upbringing. Dan attended Waterloo West High School. His sister was sexually assaulted and murdered at the age of 19 by a teenager from his neighborhood during his sophomore year of high school.

Despite the fact that his sister’s death was his greatest loss, he did not let the tragedy interfere with his focus on wrestling. Rather, he saw it as an even stronger motivation to train: “The more you can settle into focusing on what you have and what you want to do and where you want to go — a positive point of view — the quicker things turn around and positive things start to happen.”
